The role shape

Why two posted reqs and one unposted function describe a single job, and what it costs to split them.

The posting splits the role itself. QUOTED The self-serve growth engine — “paid media and sponsorships, AEO/SEO, conversion optimization on key pages and flows, and the measurement and forecasting that keeps it all optimized” — is “roughly 75% of the role.” The “other 25% is partnering with our enterprise team as an execution and thought partner on demand gen.” I’m not proposing to change that ratio. I’m proposing two things it doesn’t account for: that the 75% can’t be fully executed without a developer relations function, and that the 25% is one half of an enterprise motion whose other half you posted separately, days later. Taking the first of those: every pillar this req names has a developer-relations dependency.

Posted pillarWhere developer relations is load-bearing
AEO / SEOExperiential content is the input the current surface lacks. Only a community function generates it at volume.
Paid media and sponsorshipsConference and hackathon spend is a community motion executed with a media budget.
CRO on signup / credit purchaseThe 200-coupon event was a live activation experiment whose readout nobody claimed.
MeasurementRetention after incentive is unmeasured — and it’s what decides whether coupon spend is acquisition or leakage.
Enterprise demand genBuilder outcome stories are the raw material of enterprise proof, and they’re told in the community first.

One role, three motions: paid demand, earned demand, and partner-sourced demand, measured on the same funnel. The table above argues the second. The section below argues the third, and it argues it in your own words rather than mine.

The evidence for folding them

MEASURED At AI Engineer World’s Fair 2026, OpenRouter bought Supporting Partner — the bottom tier, no booth — while four of its own six September hackathon co-partners bought higher tiers.

INFERRED The neutral-layer advantage is real for convening and weak for exhibiting. A router competing for booth attention beside the model providers it routes to is a worse trade than hosting the room they all come to. That’s a community competency spending a media budget — which is precisely the seam that a split hire creates and a combined one closes.

MEASURED The same asymmetry shows in your own announcement data: advance notices score 9–28 reactions, posts announcing something happening right now score 92 and 101. INFERRED Presence outperforms announcement roughly fourfold, and presence is staffed, not scheduled.

The second req points at the first. The first never points back.

MEASURED Director, Channel Partnerships was published 2026-07-28, four days after this one. Same level, same remote-US shape, same zero-to-one mandate: an individual contributor who owns the whole surface and hires against it later.

QUOTED Its seventh responsibility is to “Partner with marketing to develop joint campaigns, webinars, case studies, events, and content that showcase partner solutions”. That is the only time it names marketing, and it names it as a counterpart the role requires.

MEASURED This posting never returns the reference. Searched against the growth posting’s full text, the channel vocabulary is absent entirelymarketplace, reseller, distributor, integrator, GSI, hyperscaler, co-sell, alliance, indirect: zero occurrences each. Its four uses of partner mean the enterprise team, product and engineering, or the phrase thought partner. Its four uses of channel mean paid media channels.

MEASURED And marketing is a department of one. Across 23 open roles: Go To Market 11, Engineering 9, Operations 1, Product & Design 1, Marketing 1 — this req, unfilled.

INFERRED So the dependency runs one way, and it’s yours, not mine. The channel director needs a marketing function that doesn’t exist yet; the growth director doesn’t need the channel director for anything the posting asks. Fill channel first and you’ve hired someone who can’t execute a seventh of their own mandate until this req closes. Fill this one first and the work is unblocked in both directions.

The overlap isn’t only sequencing. QUOTED The channel role is asked to “Establish OpenRouter’s presence on major cloud marketplaces, optimize listings, enable co-sell motions with hyperscaler sales teams, and drive private offers and marketplace transactions”. INFERRED Optimising an AWS, GCP or Azure listing is answer-engine work on somebody else’s domain — the same craft as the AEO/SEO pillar above, aimed at a different index. Split, two directors own two halves of one discipline. Combined, marketplace listings become one more surface in the same content system, on the same measurement rig.

And QUOTED this posting already commits its holder to “the measurement connecting marketing touches to pipeline.” INFERRED Partner-sourced revenue lands in that same pipeline. If the two roles are separate, nobody owns attribution across the seam, and the first quarter where a deal is both partner-sourced and marketing-touched becomes a credit argument instead of a number.

What this asks of you, stated plainly

A merged proposal asks you not to fill a funded, published req — to hand a wider remit to one person instead of two. That’s a real cost and I’d rather name it than let it sit under the argument.

So let me be exact about what I’m asking for, which is this job. Fill both reqs as posted and every measurement on this page still holds; I’d still want this one, and the first thing I’d do in it is build the seam to whoever takes the other. The merger is what I think the evidence says, not a condition I’m placing on the work. If you read the argument and fill both anyway, I’d rather have been useful than right.

What it buys is a single owner of one revenue system with one measurement spine: self-serve, community, enterprise direct, and enterprise indirect scored on the same funnel definition, with one budget decision reallocating across all four rather than two directors defending two budgets. What it costs is throughput — one person cannot execute four motions at the depth two could, and Horizon 1 says so explicitly.

MEASURED And the two reqs are filed in different departments. The growth req archives as Marketing; the channel req archives as Go To Market. INFERRED So the seam is already drawn on your org chart. A merged req resolves onto the Go To Market side, where the channel half of the work already sits. That is a statement about the role I’m proposing, not a correction to the ones you posted: as posted, marketing remains a department of one.

Whether one person can hold four motions at once is a fair question, and I’ve been living a small version of it since 2014. I run my own studio business end to end — demand, pricing, delivery, and the retention that decides whether a client books again, all resolving against a single P&L rather than four budgets defended separately. The room is smaller than yours by orders of magnitude and I won’t pretend the scale transfers. What transfers is the reflex: an owner never gets handed a clean seam between the work that wins a client and the work that keeps them. That is the same seam this page is arguing about, at a scale where I’ve had to hold both ends myself.

Where I can’t supply the input, I’ve said so and put a hire against it. QUOTED The channel req asks for “Existing relationships with enterprise GSIs (Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini) and hyperscaler partner organizations” and a “History of achieving significant partner revenue targets (30%+ of company revenue through indirect channels)”. I have neither, and unlike the paid-media budget — which I can answer by allocating one on paper and showing the reasoning — relationship capital has no paper substitute. It is the first hire in the partnerships pillar, not something this page argues around.

What I’d want to be judged on

Not community sentiment, and not reach. Cohort retention after activation, per surface, with the same funnel definition marketing and finance use — and on the indirect side, partner-sourced pipeline that survives the same attribution test as everything else, not a partner count. If those numbers don’t move, the argument on this page was wrong and you should be able to see it inside two quarters.
